A great pair of shoes is often worth saving. Before you retire a favourite pair, check for these signs that a resole — not a replacement — is all they need.
1. The upper still looks and feels good
If the leather or fabric on top is in solid shape with no major cracking or tearing, the shoe has plenty of life left. The sole is almost always the first thing to wear through.
2. Wear is even and moderate
Some smoothing or thinning at the heel and ball of the foot is completely normal and easy for a cobbler to correct. It’s a sign of well-fitted, well-loved shoes.
3. You can still feel the ground clearly
Once the sole gets thin enough that you notice every pebble underfoot, it’s time — but that’s a resole job, not a reason to throw the shoes out.
4. The stitching is intact
If the welt and stitching holding the upper to the sole are still solid, a cobbler can usually remove and replace just the worn sole cleanly.
5. You’d miss them
If you find yourself reaching for a pair again and again despite the wear, that’s usually the clearest sign they’re worth keeping.
Bring worn pairs into Shoes Heaven — we can tell you honestly whether a resole makes sense or whether it’s time for something new.
