Shoes spend most of their life waiting in a closet, and how they wait matters just as much as how they’re worn. A few simple habits keep them ready to go the moment the season turns.
Clean before you store, not after
Dirt and oils left on leather or fabric can set in and attract pests over months of storage. Give every pair a proper clean and let them dry fully before putting them away.
Keep their shape
Cedar shoe trees are worth the investment. They absorb moisture, control odour, and stop leather from creasing or drying into a collapsed shape while a shoe sits unworn.
Choose the right box
Original boxes with a few ventilation holes work well, or breathable fabric bags for anything delicate. Avoid sealed plastic, which traps moisture and can encourage mildew.
Mind the temperature
A cool, dry, dark space is ideal. Avoid attics, garages, or anywhere temperature swings widely — that stress is what causes leather to crack and glue to weaken over time.
Not sure if a pair needs conditioning before it goes away for the season? Bring it by and we’ll take a look.
